Digital or computer art is a direction of fine art in which the artist uses computer technology to create a work of art in digital form. With the help of special programs, artists embody their creative ideas, invent new ways to create and transmit images, recreate fantastic heroes and futuristic worlds. Thanks to the development of computer technology, creators have transferred artworks of painting, graphics and sculpture into virtual reality. In the 21st century, computer graphics began to prevail in the visual arts and replaced man-made paintings. The artists working in the digital environment began to create personal galleries and form a global cultural space. The main challenge for artists remains to preserve copyright, identify the original, transfer their digital works into reality, exhibit paintings in museum halls and determine their value.

Fine artists took notice of nascent computer technology in the early 1970s. The 1980s were the era of personal computers and the emergence of colour images. The 21st century has presented humanity with virtual reality technology able to “bring to life” the imagination of artists and transform them into digital format. A global cultural space has formed, which has united the creative endeavours of residents of different parts of the planet. New technologies and concepts have taken the visual arts to a new level, allowed the works to live their own lives and interact with the viewer.

Digital artists imitate traditional tools of the traditional artists: canvas and paint strokes, play of light, surface texture and wear of materials. The technology facilitates the process, eliminates erroneous actions, changes the composition and proportions of the image. Digital photography and the art of “photo manipulation” allow an artist to save and edit his snapshot, use retouching and colour correction, as well as combine visual objects into surreal paintings. Vector art makers develop illustrations and use mathematical formulas to determine the position of the object, weight of the paths, and the “fill colour” space.

Digital artists create whimsical abstract compositions, delight viewer with voluminous illustrations and animation. 3D graphics and animation technologies allow you to create a model of an artwork in space. The artists present the viewers with fantastic worlds in which it is possible to view an object or a hero from all sides. With the help of animation, artists design video clips, title videos and commercials, combine video filming and effects. The young talents of the 21st century use digital art methods for artistic, cultural and social statements and experiments, unite unrelated spheres of human activity, create cultural and philosophical concepts.
