Description of the artwork «"Bishops"»
"Bishops",
oil on canvas, 2020
Catholic fashion.
The traditional clothing of the assigned ministers is the cassock. The color of the cassock depends on the degree of cleric: black - from the reader and above, black with raspberry (purple) buttons ⠀ - for monsignors and bishops, raspberry (purple) can be worn by bishops, red - cardinals, white - Pope. ⠀ ⠀
The bishop wears a wide linen bishop’s belt over the cassock, the end of which hangs down: the bishop has a crimson belt (monsignors can wear similar belts), the cardinal has red, and the Pope has white. On his shoulders over a cassock, the bishop wears a drape called the mantle. ⠀ ⠀
On the head, the bishop wears a bishop’s cap - a small round headdress with a short tuft in the middle: its color varies depending on the dignity in the same way as in the case of a cassock and a belt (similar priests also wear black hats in some monastic orders; monsignors sometimes wear the same black hats with a raspberry crest). ⠀ ⠀
The cardinal hat is one of the main symbols of the vestments of the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church. For the first time, the red hat was granted to cardinals by Pope Innocent IV in 1245. The red color symbolizes the willingness to shed its carrier blood for faith and for the Church. ⠀ ⠀
Initially, only the cap symbolized the appropriation of the rank of cardinal to a person, but later all the vestments of the cardinals turned red and the cardinals were called purple bearers. The sayings “give a cardinal hat” or “receive a cardinal hat” meant to elevate the cardinal.. ⠀
