Description of the artwork «Leonardo da Vinci and his pupil examining lefkaritika»
In 1481 Leonardo da Vinci visited the mountain village of Lefkara in Cyprus. During this period he had his own workshop in Florence. Here in Lefkara he purchased an altar cloth ("lefcaritica") made of traditional lace, which he then donated to decorate the main altar of Milan's famous Duomo di Milano cathedral. Some art historians claim that the same lefkaritika is depicted in Leonardo's great fresco The Last Supper.
How Leonardo looked as a young man is not known. According to the description of his contemporaries, he was very tall, remarkably handsome, proportionately built, possessed extraordinary strength and was charming in communication.
