Is there nothing behind?

The mountains are shrouded in fog. A narrow, but stormy stream behind. A bridge is thrown over it, personifying memories of the past. But the bridge is damaged, and it is impossible to go back on it, of course. A man is sitting with his back to the stream, thinking and doubting.
There's a solid fog ahead. An impenetrable veil over the future.
The title of the painting expresses anxiety about the future. Is there really nothing behind this veil, no expectations, no hopes, no meaning?
But the title of the work also refers the viewer to the past. Is there really nothing left of the past to rely on? Maybe on a dilapidated bridge you can still reach something in your past that could be a help on the way to the future? ...
If you lift the veil behind it you find a silhouette resembling either a door or a tombstone ....
The choice depends only on ourselves.
