A concept in ancient Greek aesthetics, characterizing the aesthetic impact of art on man. The term "catharsis" was used in multiple ways; in religious meaning (purification of the spirit through mental experiences), ethical meaning (elevation of the human mind, ennobling of its feelings), physiological meaning (relief after strong sensual tension).
