And hunting, and sledding
What is the north without sled dogs? Yakutian huskies are one of the oldest breeds, used for riding and hunting as far back as 8000 years ago. For Yakut hunters of the 16th century, a husky was considered a great value, and its puppy was an expensive gift. Adults were not given or exchanged, as the dog was the main breadwinner and transportation for the family. The Northerners also believed that huskies had supernatural powers and could see spirits.
In Vitus Bering's expedition Yakut huskies carried equipment and food for the brave explorer, and in the 19th century the dogs were used to deliver mail to remote areas. However, in the 50s of the last century the Soviet government considered breeding Yakutian huskies inexpedient and organized their mass extermination. Only half a century later enthusiasts were able to revive the indigenous breed. In 2004 it was recognized by the Russian Cynological Federation, and 15 years later - by the whole world.
