Born in the family of a brewer. Studied in Dresden from Christian Ludwig von Hagedorn, then Christian Gottlieb Mitch, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich and Bernardo Bellotto. In 1777, approved the rank of a member of the Dresden Academy of fine arts. In 1790-1792 he worked in Italy. From 1800 Professor of landscape painting at the Dresden Academy.
