Description of the artwork «Love»

Gustav Klimt painted the picture “Love” in 1895. It belongs to the early period of his work. A simple at first glance, the plot upon closer examination is not so simple. Hero-lover looks dangerous and ruthless, almost like demons from the paintings of Vrubel. The girl is drowning in his arms, as if ready to die in them without looking back.

At the top of the picture, the artist depicted the three ages of a woman - an old woman, a child and a mature lady - an image to which he still will return more than once. At the same work, he can symbolize both the transience of life against the background of a moment of passion that has stopped, and the sweet death in the name of love - the moment when, before a fatal kiss, as if all life flashes before one’s eyes.
