Breakfast in the garden

Painting, 1883, 81×117 cm

Description of the artwork «Breakfast in the garden»

For Breakfast Giuseppe de Nittis portrayed his wife and son. Breakfast in nature one of the most common impressionistic scenes.

The picture space is generously lit by the sun, cleverly reflected the play of light and shadows from the trees in the meadow. Across the meadow wandering ducks and geese, the mood of the picture a few bucolic. We feel a summer day that is just beginning and will be infinitely long and filled with the same serenity that now prevails at the table. Using favorite impressionist principle of transience, Nittis shows the moment when the boy, in all probability, approached the bird. The back of the chair in the foreground, partially caught "in frame" and Cutlery with a napkin thrown carelessly create a feeling that right now, someone else left the table. It is possible to put together an easel?

Still life is not detailed, we perceive it as a whole. However, a wadded up napkin in the foreground still catches the eye - very nice!
