Description of the artwork «Picnic»

"Picnic" — a more recent variant of the name of James Tissot. It was originally called the "Holyday" that is "holiday", but this version is almost not used.

And it really is a picnic, not a holiday. Elegant, sophisticated, slightly tiring fresh air and an abundance of tea, but it's just a snack in the fresh air with a leisurely conversation near the pond.

Tea party friends is not a fantasy author, it was written in the open air in the garden of the London house of Tissot. Early mild autumn, perhaps one of the highlights for those lovers of svetopisny as the owner of the house. Guests and beloved author Kathleen Newton, looking in the direction and as if absent from the main stage, can afford to be dressed in the fresh air is relatively easy and feel relaxed. The chestnut leaves turn yellow in warm earth tones and give the picture of very weak warm Golden glow. She shines light, despite the shadows enveloped the garden and the dark motionless water of the pond.

The guests, like the Shah, a man, judging by the extraordinary hat on his head, a member of the famous cricket club "I Zingari". From the tiny milkman he pours milk into the Cup is young, full of life girl, whose carefully-chosen outfit playfully "diluted" her long wavy hair the color of chestnut.

The picture entices the viewer not only inviting the hidden light, the General mood of relaxation aristocratic leisure, and details. Aunt in a comfortable chair settled on the trees, and her feet attentively listening to the girl and the red-bearded man, podpisi head with his hand. Maybe she says something interesting, and the rules of decency require to listen to the older person. Behind the tree you can see the man, who was also a member of the club, and a fragment of a lady's hat, so he probably spends nice time. On the other side of the pond, a gentleman who entertains the lady talk.

This outing combines the ordinariness of life and pleasant acadedmiae event. This is a quick, but careful look at one of life's scenes so loved by the Impressionists. The choice of the subject was probably dictated by the influence of "Breakfast on the grass" Manet. But we are talking only about the plot, the provocation is not characteristic of Tissot, and it remains true to British restraint.

"Picnic" was created as an extension or perhaps addition to the picture "Recovery" written in the same garden with the same perspective. In the future, the paintings were separated and never put together.
"Picnic" was purchased by the Tate Gallery in 1928.
