He studied at the Royal Academy of fine arts and discovered a pre-Raphaelite reading a magazine «Rostok». In his early career, Hughes was heavily influenced by Milles, and in the same way as he portrayed Ophelia (for example, «Ophelia», 1851−53, Art gallery, Manchester) and created paintings dedicated to the works of John Keats. Later Arthur Hughes illustrated some books by George MacDonald. He left about 700 paintings and sketches, and more than 750 illustrations.
