Jan van
Huysum

Netherlands • 1682−1749

Studied with his father, the famous painter Justus van Hasuma. Worked with 1704 in Amsterdam. Wrote still life with flowers and fruit (still life with fruit, Schwerin Art Museum; paired Flowers pattern and Flowers and fruit, executed by order of R. Walpole to the castle, Houghton Hall, "England", the two — 1722, Saint-Petersburg, GOS. The Hermitage).

The tradition of floral still life continued HaSulam almost to the middle. XVIII century, while all the other genres of Dutch painting was in decline. Features of this decline was reflected in his work. The artist's works are distinguished by the splendor and together with the careful execution of details. Combining their luxury bouquets across the entire plane of the canvas, plants flowering at different seasons, inhabiting their set is not immediately visible, crawling, flying living beings, just like under a microscope transmitting water droplets, pollen, the delicate veins on the wings of insects, the artist reaches the impression cold and somewhat artificial virtuosity. Floral still lifes of Hasuma designed to decorate the most expensive areas, designed for external effect. Master found a new one that struck his contemporaries trick: he abandoned the traditional dark background that required a different, lighter color combinations. The symbolism of the colors image as ideas of transience (Vanitas) departs here for the home decorative task.

The works of Kasuma, the most expensive painter among his contemporaries, was a huge success, spawned numerous imitators until the XIX century.
