Petrovich Svinin

1787−1839

Author of books of travel essays with his own illustrations, including "the Experience of picturesque travel across North America" (1815), "Sights of St. Petersburg and its environs" (part 1 to 5, 1816-1828), the novel "Ermak, or the Conquest of Siberia" (1834) and a number of works. During one of his travels in Russia, Svin'in visited in Orenburg, Iletsk Protection and other areas of the province. His travel experiences are reflected in the sketch prose.

(8 (19) June 1787, the manor Efremov Galich district Kostroma — 9 (21) April 1839) — Russian writer, publisher, journalist and editor, artist, historian, geographer, and collector.

He studied at the Noble boarding school of Moscow University. Debuted in print in 1803 (paninski magazine "the dawn"). Served in the Moscow archive Collegium of foreign Affairs. In 1806 he was assigned to Vice-Admiral D. N. Senyavin, who was with the squadron in the Mediterranean sea. In 1811-1813 served as Secretary to the Russian Consul General in Philadelphia.

His first book was published in America ("Sketches of Moscow and St. Petersburg", 1813; reissued in 1814 in London under the title "Sketches of Russia"). In 1813 he served at the headquarters of the Russian army in Germany. In 1814 he returned to Russia. He published several books of travel essays (1814-1818). In 1818-1830 published the magazine "Otechestvennye Zapiski".

In 1824, he retired with the rank of state Councilor and was engaged in literary and publishing activities. Released book, "Memorability of St. Petersburg and its environs" (part 1 to 5, 1816-1828), "Index of the main attractions of remaining in the Workshop of the Armoury chamber" (1826). Was a member of the Academy of fine arts and member of the Russian Academy. Swingin belonged to the so-called "Russian Museum" — a collection of paintings, sculptures, antiquities, manuscripts, along with numismatic and mineralogical collections. In 1834 financial difficulties forced him to sell his collection.

He was familiar with F. by V. Bulgarini, A. S. Griboyedov, N. I Graham, I. A. Krylov, A. S. Pushkin and other Russian writers. Many of them attended literary evenings at the apartment Svinyin. It was suggested that the plot of the Comedy N. V. Gogol "Auditor" dates back to stories about the trip Svinyin in Bessarabia in 1815.

Svinyin — author of the first biography of mechanics self-taught I. P. Kulibin (1819), historical novels "Shemyakin court, or the Last civil wars of the Russian princes" (1832), "Ermak, or the Conquest of Siberia" (1834), dramatic works. In 1838 resumed the publication of "notes of the Fatherland", where he printed an excerpt from his "History of Peter the Great". From January 1839 the magazine was transferred on loan by A. A. Krayevsky.
