Description of the artwork «Bells (The Bell Tower Of Ivan The Great)»

"Bells" is one of the most famous architectural landscapes Aristarchus Lentulov. In the center we see rocking the bell. And the ringer, and the bell seem tiny relative to the effect they produce, which is the subject of the painting. From rocking the bells the waves... the sound? color? the structure itself?

Architectural landscapes Lentulov have their own special structure. Building in them, as a rule, bevelled leaning tower own eyes beheld Yes (go to study painting in Paris, and visited Italy). Parts of buildings have Lentulov crowd, Bouncing around, head in the clouds, creating a sense of ephemerality and magic, as if it's not about the real Moscow, and the fabulous, in which space and plane, colours and sounds cheering, but the video perspective is missing. By the way, about the intersection of the planes. In the architectural landscapes Lentulov often crosses them in the most literal sense, using the technique of collage. There are stickers, foil, and paper, some paintings happen inserting of velvet, satin. For this reason, a number of his paintings are almost never exhibited in other museums. In particular, it is unlikely to see the "Ringing" can be somewhere besides the Tretyakov gallery – photo collage very easy to damage during transport.

In urban landscapes reflect the artist's interest in ahisma Robert Delaunay. But if Delaunay often introduces the viewer into the inner space of the picture then on the canvases Lentulov various plane and space like collide, clash, and CliniMACSI each other, creating the intersection of the planes, not the volume.

If you stay near the bell ringer, it can really be this feeling, wonderfully transferred to the painting – like world crumbles and then going out of puzzles, items, and a bonding substance for him is the sound. Art historian Irina Vakar, comparing the Eiffel tower in the paintings of Delaunay and "Ivan the Great" Lentulov, joked that the Delaunay tower "the same, only there is no sound."

Aristarkh Lentulov was very fond of bell ringing. His daughter, art historian Marianna Lentulova, recalls that when the Soviet government "cancelled" the bells, father sometimes hung on a rope over a cast iron stove poker, plugged anything the ears and beaten with a poker about the stove. The result was a bell, resembling a bell.

It is known that Lentulov had a great ear for music and treated the paintings as symphonies in paint. The picture should sound! In this sense, "Bells" is one of the most successful works, it emits a unique feeling of a bell ringing, hum, gave resonance throughout the body.

At the posthumous exhibition of paintings by Aristarkh Lentulov to Marianne approached the young guy and said he knows absolutely nothing about painting, but looking at these pictures, can swear that depicting them as people worked with the songs and felt the music.
