Peter van Blumenau (1657-1720), a pupil of Simon van Douwe, spent 20 years in Rome, where he earned the nickname the Standard. He painted landscapes and architectural views with figures of men and horses, and scenes of a soldier's life. His paintings are found in many museums. One of them, "Manege riding in the open air", is the Imp. The Hermitage.
