The lack of financial resources has prevented the child a future Professor of the Academy of arts Nikolai Andreyevich Koshelev to do in the picturesque school of academician AV Stupin that was opened in the city of Arzamas. And yet the thirst for creativity made him go forward — for the 1862 student Koshelev received three silver medals. And in 1863 it was purchased a few of his works, which finally improved the financial situation of the artist. Since 1865 N.. Koshelev for several years working on the murals of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. It was for this work he became an academician (1873) and Professor (1878) at the Academy of fine arts. His life and work (and the painter also owns remarkable portraits, landscapes and genre paintings) N.. Koshelev seemed to have proved that "in painting there is no broad high road, and only one can reach her shining peaks, who without fear of fatigue, it climbs the rocky trails" (we have taken the liberty of replacing only one word to repeat the famous words of Karl Marx — they are organically applicable to the fate of Russian artist).

Born in the village of Semanah Penza province, in the family of a serf. He early showed artistic ability. Seeing their son's interest in art, his father sent him to train with the painter Davydov in Nizhny Novgorod. But he only rubbed the paint and primed Board.

At home, he persistently engaged in painting, hoping to enter the Academy of arts. A local landowner gave him the opportunity to paint in your home. Assisted Koshelev, take lessons from an experienced teacher in Kazan. Here he performed his first work is the iconostasis for the Church and received the order in a Church painting.

In the fall of 1860. he entered the Academy of arts as an auditor. His early work is marked by an interest in the lives of ordinary people, ability in a simple plot to reveal a typical phenomenon.

In 1862, Nikolai Andreevich was awarded a Small silver medal for a study from nature, in the same year his work "1st number" appeared on the academic exhibition. Two years later, his competition entry "mercury lulls of August" was awarded a Small gold medal.

N..Koshelev was "Cooperative A. A. Krestonostseva" (1864 – 1865), founded by a group of students of the Academy for financial support. When the gang broke up, he became a member of "the St. Petersburg artel of artists" (1863 – 1871 years). In March 1865, participated in an art exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod, which became the prototype of future traveling exhibitions.

In the farm Koshelev has worked hard and enthusiastically. There he created his best works – "Ofen-peddler" and "religious Procession in a village" (State Tretyakov gallery). Was engaged in design of Church buildings. Under the direction of I. N. Kramskoy painted the dome of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.

In 1895 – 1896 by the N..Koshelev worked on the creation of cartons for outer mosaics of the Church of the Resurrection in St. Petersburg, and in 1898 to 1899 – for internal mosaic. He created cartoons with the image of the Seraphim for 5 small headdress and a large cardboard "Christ in glory" for the southern gable. Inside the temple, in his sketches of the "Transfiguration" in East polyopoly and "the Flight into Egypt" on the East side.

The artist was a member of the society "Mossanovski Mondays" (1881 – 1917), an event initiated by the E. I. Muscara and groups of Amateur artists to assist the families of the artists.
