Meliksetovich Aghajanyan

Armenia • 1863−1940

[16(28).12.1863, Shusha, Nagorno — Karabakh Republic, 13.12.1940, Yerevan], a Soviet painter, portraitist, folk artist of Armenian SSR (1938). He studied at the art Studio in Marseille (1886-90) and the académie Julian in Paris (1897-1900) J. P. Laurens and B. constant. Worked in Rostov-on-don (1903) and Yerevan (1922). Realistic portraits as different richness characteristics, restraint of color (portraits of father and mother, both of 1900). Some of them turn to portraits of types ("Uncle Sedrak" and"Vasil", both 1926; "homeless", 1928); marked by a deep psychological self-portraits (1925 and 1926). (All of these works in the Art gallery of Armenia in Yerevan.)
