N. P. Akimov was in Petersburg very young, and almost all of his life was tightly connected with this city.

He studied in the Studio of S. M. Seidenberg (1915−18), a few years later entered the Academy of fine Arts, but left her not finish my studies.

Was engaged in book graphics and managed to create a name for yourself, but really found myself in scenography. Theater work so fascinated him that in the late 1920s he turned to directing, making her the second if not the first profession: in 1933 he headed the Leningrad music hall, and in 1935 — the famous Leningrad Comedy theater, artistic Director of which he remained until his death (except for 1949−55., when he was forced to go to another team).

The theater was the original center of a variety of creative interests Akimov. Famous for his mischievous and graceful, sometimes paradoxical comedic performances, among them a special place belongs to the first interpretation of the play, fairy tales, E. L. Schwartz.

The scenery and costumes created by Akimov after the war — mostly to his own productions, always had a rare imagination and ingenuity ("Shadows" Saltykov-Shchedrin, 1952; "the Case" by A. V. Sukhov-Kobylin, 1955; "Dragon" E. Schwartz, 1962; "don Juan" George. Byron, 1963). Original posters, which he performed for each of its performance, was an integral part of urban commercial in the 1930s and 60s.

In a huge series of paintings and graphic portraits created by a master for several decades, preference to theater people — actors, Directors, playwrights. The themes of theatre and drama prevailed in his book graphics, to which he returned and the 1960s after a long break. Mainly the problems of the theater was dedicated and its brilliant polemical articles, formed the later two volumes.

A born teacher, Governors from 1955 he taught at the Leningrad theatrical Institute, founded and led by the faculty (1960 Professor), where he trained many excellent masters of scenography.

A brilliant and witty man, Akimov was part of the artistic elite of the city, defining its high level and unique face.
