Russia 1848−1916
Biography and information
Surikov Vasily Ivanovich(12 (24) January 1848, Krasnoyarsk — 6 (19) March 1916, Moscow) - Russian painter, master of historical painting. Paintings by Vasily Surikov revived the world of the bygone eras of Russian history. Skill Surikov as a subtle colourist and owns great composition of the artist (friends even called him "a composer") made him one of the main figures of Russian painting. For more than 25 years he was a member of the Association of traveling exhibitions.
Features of the artist Vasily Surikov: polyphonic, finely written composition; a virtuosic ability to write a crowd of people, with each individual character; a subtle sense of color and an elaborate colour paintings; treatment of Russian history, the reconstruction of historical situations.
Famous paintings by Vasily Surikov: "Morning Strelets'execution", "Boyar Morozova", "Menshikov in Berezov", "The capture of snow town".

Vasily Surikov was able to say "no". He refused a pensioner's trip through the Academy of arts in Europe (though offered to him immediately after graduation, and six months later), preferring to deal with the painting of the temple of Christ the Savior. Europe from it will not go away, but first, Surikov wanted to achieve financial independence (she started with the fact that the film Vasily Surikov "Morning of the Streltsy execution" Pavel Tretyakov bought for 8 thousand, huge for those times money). Three times refused the teaching at the Academy of arts and the Moscow school of painting, architecture and sculpture. And there is a story that often "talk about death" with his dying wife of Leo Tolstoy Surikov descended the stairs.

Vasily Surikov was born in Krasnoyarsk and life is extremely proud of their belonging to the old Cossack birth. After his father's death the family was in straitened financial situation. Active part in his further education took the Yenisei Governor Pavel Zamyatin and the Siberian gold mines Pyotr Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov appreciated the paintings by Vasily Surikov, and assumed all the costs of studying and living him in St. Petersburg.

Then everything developed rapidly: the Society for the encouragement of arts, Academy of, medals awarded; artist; Surikov – contender for a gold medal, but does not get it, and after he refuses the fellowship trip.

The first large work of the artist Surikov upon completion of training was not a painting, a fresco in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. It also allowed him to find his place in a geographical sense – Surikov remained in Moscow, the city was to him real close, it says here the most famous paintings of the artist. Here he found his only love: Elizabeth Ball wife bore him two daughters (the eldest was later married artist Pyotr Konchalovsky). The premature death of his wife became Surikov of this tragedy, two years he did not take up the brush and only trip to his native Krasnoyarsk gave lost inspiration: painting Vasily Surikov "Taking a snow town" – like a photo of his own carefree childhood.

Back in Moscow, Surikov started to travel a lot, continued to work actively and did not even have time to realize all the ideas. Buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery beside his wife.
