This well-preserved picture of Brinberg, a pioneer of Italian landscape painting, from a few years after his return from Rome to Amsterdam. The theme of the preaching of St. John in the wilderness was often used by Dutch artists as an analogy with the Protestant service, when the Netherlands were still ruled by Catholic Spain.
