“The Philosopher Explaining the Model of the Solar System” is a painting by the English artist Joseph Wright, painted around 1766. The full name is “A Philosopher giving a Lecture on the Orrery in which a lamp is put in place of the Sun.” A philosopher explaining the model of the solar system in which the lamp replaces the Sun. “The philosopher” is the second (after the “Gladiator”) the artist’s painting, in which the characters and objects of the scene are depicted by a candlelight invisible to the viewer.The faces of the characters in the painting show one of the main phases of the moon - the new moon, crescent, the moon “at the expense” (75%) and the full moon.
