Description of the artwork «Portrait of an unknown woman in a white cap»

"Dark artist." - noticed one day in the hearts of the researcher Rokotova, desperate to shed light on the countless dark spots in his biography. "Dark" is the name of the artist and the audience, but for a different reason – for his highly time-darkened paintings. And the legacy of Fedor Rokotov, more than any other of his contemporaries, a lot of "dark" portraits in the sense that, despite their undeniable artistic value, now it is not possible to answer, who exactly they represent. Portrait of an unknown unknown – the most that neither is familiar to Rokotova attribution.

It was so "dark" portrait was long and late rokotovskie masterpiece "Portrait of an unknown woman in a white cap". Strict lady with piercing-swerlein eyes and continued to exist incognito, if not one of the best experts Rokotova, Sergei Suchkov. He suggested, and the version found compelling, what really rokotovskie unknown was the broadest known around St. Petersburg.

This powerful and sinister old lady, respected and feared in secular circles, both young and old. Her name is – Natalya Petrovna Golitsyna. With this naturalnoy person Pushkin wrote his "Queen of spades".

The Countess of Golitsyna, nee Chernyshova, in the days of his youth traveled widely and shone in the light. Her grace was admired, and at balls at Versailles she even once handed diamond jewellery "for the nice agility in the dance." But apart from grace, was Natalia Petrovna some special, rare grandeur. Only one its kind she was forced to faint and tremble all who knew her. There were rumors that the Russian Countess "on you" with occultist and adventurer Saint-Germain. Golitsyn was a damn observant, very witty... and very evil. Do not envy for those who have had the misfortune to get the Countess into language. With all the servile homage, which is felt all grown old Countess, she frankly was afraid of.

Inscribed in the rectangle of the oval rokotovskie portrait looking at us much-traveled, I am jaded, but it seems that no world-weary old woman. Her lips compressed and arrogant, perhaps even contemptuously. The look of brown eyes we miss and a trace of senile stupidity or laxity. This look is smart, focused and cold. A baleful look. It high skepticism and no hint of any sentiment.

"The Queen of spades signifies secret ill-will". This epigraph from the Latest guess book opens Pushkin and his famous story. And, it seems, it is those words which best described the emotion that through the years gives us a sinister rokotovskie an old woman in a high starched cap. Intelligent and strict person really exudes a "secret malevolence". Such would be unable to capture any sly, complacent Levitsky or sentimental Borovikovsky. Only Roars! The most astute and profound psychologist of all Russian masters of the XVIII century.

And another curious fact in the end. Pushkin, as we recall, his heroine buried in the Queen of spades the old lady dies suddenly at the sight aimed a gun at her German, to death to come to him and to inform the coveted card "three, seven, ACE". But her alleged prototype, the Countess of Golitsyna, healing in the world. About such usually say: "Nothing takes!" At the time of death the Countess was about a hundred years. She died only in 1837 – exactly one year with Pushkin, as if in retaliation, Herman not only greedy, but his ingenious Creator. Truly the Queen of spades!
