Biography and information

[21.5(2.6).1895, the Nizhny Novgorod — 3.11.1959, Moscow], Soviet painter, honored artist of the RSFSR (1946), corresponding member AH the USSR (1947). Communist party member from 1917. During the Civil war of 1918-20 he worked in the Cheka in Nizhny Novgorod, was a Commissioner of the marine detachment on the Volga. Studied in VKhUTEMAS (1922-24) at A. E. Arkhipov; during these years he performed in the circus and on stage. Was a member of AHRR (1924). The most famous cycle of "Homeless" (1925-26; Tretyakov gallery; Russian Museum, Leningrad, Gorky art Museum) and paintings dedicated to the sailors — participants Civil and the great Patriotic war: "the Men in ambush" (1927-28), "Brother" (1932), "Glory to the fallen heroes" (1945; State prize of the USSR, 1945) — all in Tretyakov gallery; "Found a friend" (1932-33, Central Museum of Armed Forces, Moscow). He taught painting in the all-Union Institute of cinematography in Moscow (1938-59; Professor from 1939). Chairman of the Moscow branch of the Union of artists of the USSR in 1955-58. Awarded 2 orders and medals.

Born in a family lawyer. Arriving in Moscow, where he entered the law faculty of the University (1914), he was close to futurists. In 1916-1921 was a military pilot, the Commissioner of the don flotilla, a security officer. Wrote poems in the spirit of "left" revolutionary futurism (poetry collection Give!, 1922).
