Petr
Ignatievich Bromirsky

Russia • 1886−1919

Born in the town of Ustilug (Volyn province, Ukraine) June 29 (July 11), 1886 into a poor middle class family. Arriving in 1904 in Moscow, lived in the house of the psychiatrist F. A. Usoltseva, where he met with a sick M. A. Vrubel, who became his first mentor in art. In 1905-1913 he worked as a modeller in the majolica workshop of Mamontov at a ceramic factory at Butyrskaya Outpost in Moscow. Attended the School of painting, sculpture and architecture (1906-1910), where he studied, in particular, in the class of p. P. Trubetskoy; we met at the school with M. F. Larionov. Participated in the exhibition "Blue rose" (1907). In 1910 he traveled with Mamontov to Italy. He returned to Moscow in connection with the death of Vrubel and removed his death mask. In 1914-1917 he served in the army. 1917 creatively cultivated V. N. By Chekrygin. He taught at the art school N. And.Vasiliev and Free art workshops (1918).

Typical images-visions in the spirit of symbolism "Blue rose" sometimes joined in his watercolours and gouaches of the second half of 1900-ies (Billiards (Death of Pierrot), private collection, Moscow) with the ironic grotesque. Over time, the Central importance in his paintings and graphics have received a gospel topic (the Meeting of Mary with Elizabeth and the other drawings in the late 1910-ies – in the Tretyakov gallery). Came to the fore in these years and how wonderful the sculptor, combining impressionistic texture with sharp decorative flair (Woman with baby, tree, 1905, Museum-reserve "Abramtsevo"; Bark, gypsum, 1918-1919, Russian Museum). Created in 1919 – the plan "monumental propaganda" – his masterpiece, the monument to V. I. Surikov to the red square in the figure of the apocalyptic angel with a sword and a chalice in his hands. Part of the huge figures were already made in the material (sheet of iron technique punch), but never collected, then stored in the Museum vaults in Zagorsk, where he disappeared, likely sent to the scrapyard (there are only a few preparatory drawings and plaster sketch in the archives of the Ministry of culture in Sergiev Posad).

Bromirski died of typhus in Moscow in December 1919 (January 1920). Charm religious symbolic ideas Bromirsky made him posthumously one of the "founders" of the group "Jack of diamonds", where the name of the prematurely deceased master was surrounded by a special honor.
