After the Stalingrad battle he was encircled and was captured. To escape from a German camp in Germany was only at the second attempt. Vechtomov crossed the border with Czechoslovakia and by accident got to Prague, where long he lived in exile brother of the father of the famous cellist of a world-class Ivan Vechtomov. He and his family hid in a Prague apartment who fled from captivity of his nephew. Vechtomov graduated from the war in the Slovak partisan. After demobilization in 1946, he entered the Moscow city art College. His teachers were M. S. Perutsky, K. G. Dorokhov, M. T. Khazanov, S. S. Boim. In 1949 the school was closed for "formalism", and students were transferred to the Moscow regional art school memory of 1905, which Vechtomov and graduated in 1951. The beginning of self-creation is connected with the natural landscape. In the late 1950s to replace field work came abstract compositions. In the artist's works began to be seen the cosmic consciousness: generalized real and geometric shapes were placed in a semi-infinite space. Already in 1958, wanting to move away from the prevailing officially-ideological art, Vechtomov created the first song in the new plastic form - "REQUIEM" (GTT). He lived at this time, the artist in the town of Dolgoprudny (near Moscow). In the village of Lianozovo (near Ekaterinburg) became acquainted with the artist Vechtomova, E. L. Kropivnitsky and his wife O. A. Potapova, and later with their son E. L. Kropivnitsky, who returned from Soviet camps after rehabilitation. Thus arose the "Lianozovsky group". While to a certain extent, group members were United almost common appeal to the expressionist tradition. Vechtomov in the mid-1960s returned to the old creative setting, where the main color, form, space. The artist says about his work: "At the core of much of what I'm doing, based on real experiences and feelings from reality, from the surrounding objects, living beings, circumstances. But the important thing is that I always feel the desire to share the mysteries of the world and mirosanu". Works Vechtomova difficult to attribute to any traditional genre. It's kind of symbolic-allegorical compositions, which are based on conventional, highly abstracted forms and tense, often tragic and disturbing contrast color combinations . These works include: - "the ROAD", 1983; "BLACK SUN", 1990; "the underworld", the triptych, 1976; "DON Quixote", 1991.The artist travels a lot around the country - in the 1970s, in Tyumen oblast, Kyrgyzstan, Khabarovsk Krai on the sea of Okhotsk, Sakhalin and the Kuriles. Impressions from these visits are reflected in the works of "GUARDIANS of KUNASHIR" (1979), "full MOON" (1990), "MEDITATION" (1990).

For 45 years of creative ways Vechtomov participated in many exhibitions in Russia and abroad. His first solo exhibition was held in 1961 in Moscow; in 1972 in Czechoslovakia in Prague in 1983 in Moscow, in the hall on Malaya Gruzinskaya street; in 1990, in Germany in the city of Fulda; in 1995 in Khabarovsk in far Eastern art Museum; in 1996 in Moscow, gallery A-3.
