The American painter. The representative of the late American romanticism. Attended the National Academy of drawing in new York (1871), but was formed mainly as autodidact. Wrote Pastorals, imaginary landscapes, appealed to the sublimely romantic subjects drawn from literature ("the flying Dutchman", 1887, Smithsonian institution, Washington).
