The contribution of the USSR to world culture and civilization. 1980

Painting, 250×500 cm

Description of the artwork «The contribution of the USSR to world culture and civilization. 1980»

When UNESCO invited Ilya Glazunov to create a large painting reflecting the contribution of the USSR to world culture and civilization, it was a confirmation of international recognition of the great painter. As, however, he would be able to meet the challenge of such complexity – to reflect in one painting the scale of centuries-old accomplishments of more than one hundred peoples and nationalities inhabiting the territory of the former Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union, covering one-sixth of the space of the Earth?
Every year, UNESCO celebrates the anniversary of, honoring outstanding individuals who have enriched world civilization. In presenting easily recognizable descriptions of the great scientists and artists and writers of various nationalities, as well as the fruits of their creative genius, Glazunov created an image, filled with power of his homeland throughout history. His work was presented to UNESCO by the Soviet government, and the public's response to the painting worldwide was enthusiastic. Today, it hangs in one of the houses the head office of the organization in Paris. International critics have noted unusual use of color, its daring compositional layout and truly innovative presentation of such a complex question to be. French critics noted that UNESCO had invited only three artists of world fame – Miro, Picasso, and Glazunov.
In a speech during the ceremonial presentation of painting the Secretary-General stated: “We are sure that all who come to UNESCO men and women, young and old – would feel, standing before this work, the humanistic essence it contains, inspiring the development of creativity in the name of justice, of human happiness and peace.”
