In 1941-1944 was evacuated to Nizhnii Tagil, Sverdlovsk region.

Born in the village Vesele, Kharkiv region. In 1923 – 1930 he studied at HHI of M. Sharonov, S. Prokhorov, O. Coquelles. In 1932 – 1941 and 1944 – 1950 he taught at HHI. From 1956 to 1962 was Chairman of the Board of CFS. Worked in the field of painting, easel and book graphics. Widely known paintings of Cossack theme: the series "the Khmelnytsky oblast", "Pereyaslavska Rada", the triptych "the Duma about Cossack Golota" etc Author of illustrations to the works of I. Kotlyarevsky, T. Shevchenko, L. Ukrainka, N. Gogol, N. Nekrasov. In 1958 a corresponding member of the USSR AI, 1963 and the people's artist of the USSR. Academician AI of Ukraine, Professor since 1995. Laureate of the State prize of the USSR them. T. Shevchenko (1965). Of the Union approved the annual prize. M. Deregus for young artists.
