The companion portrait for several centuries was considered the work of an unknown author of the XV century and only relatively recently been attributed to fra Filippo Lippi. Despite the recent anonymity to mention it was only like "famous pair portrait from the Metropolitan Museum of art".

There are quite reliable assumptions about who is depicted in the portrait. They come from such important details: men hands on the portrait are on the family crest of the family Scolari. It is believed that we have before us the representative of this genus – Lorenzo Ranieri Scolari. A woman is in all probability, became his wife in about the year 1436 Angiola di Bernardo Sapiti.
