Biography and information

Painter. Member of the Union of artists of the USSR.

Honored art worker of the Latvian SSR, corresponding member of the Academy of arts USSR, Professor.

Born into a family of artisans.

From 1941 – 1947 with families deported to Tomsk oblast, RSFSR. He lived in Taganrog, graduated from Junior high school, 1945 – 1946 was a sorter in lying the factory. In 1946 he moved to Syktyvkar, was an assistant decorator in the theater of the Komi ASSR.

1947. back in Riga and 1952. he graduated from the Art school named after J. Rosenthal.

1958. he graduated from Department of painting at the art Academy of Latvia with a diploma work "From work", under the direction of E. Kalnina.

1958 – 1962 teacher at the Art school named after J. Rosenthal. 1958. the teacher Preparatory courses at the Academy of Arts of Latvia. 1962. senior lecturer, associate Professor, 1967. Vice-rector in scientific and educational work. 1972. head of the Studio of Monumental painting, from 1978. full member of the USSR Academy of Arts and Honorary member of the Royal Academy of England , a member of the Art Union of Latvia since 1960. Received many honours.

Great master figurative themed painting, forming the so-called severe style. Scrappers wrote about Latvian red Riflemen. Official appreciation headed for revolutionary historical themes. In his works he interpreted the Trap of the European Foundation school (D. Velasquez, Vermeer van Delft). In many paintings there are mix of genres.

A great portrait painter and master of still life. Writes and landscapes (urban). Works in oil, watercolor and pastel technique. Illustrated books and did monumental painting.
