Graduated from the Leningrad. VHUTEMAS – VHUTEIN (1928). In 1937-40 he was engaged in lithography. G. S. Vereisky at the workshop of the Leningrad. CX. In 1950-51, it was Chapter thin. Leningr. z-da hood. glass. Revived the traditions of Russian art. Judaica. Was also engaged in the creation of stained glass , ceramic products. The author of pictorial and graphic cycles (tempera, and lithography) "Tevye the milkman" by Sholem Aleichem (1957-61), "Jewish folk song" (1958-60), "From Jewish folk poetry" (1962-63), etc. works.

Real name Tanchum Leyvikovich. Born in Rogachev (Mogilev province) December 28, 1902 (10 January 1903) in the family butcher. He studied at the Higher artistic-technical Institute (VHUTEIN) in Petrograd-Leningrad (1921-1927) and at G. S. vereyskogo A. A. Rylova. He lived in Leningrad, often bumping into their homes in the former pale of settlement, where he studied the remaining traces of traditional Jewish life and culture. In 1937-1940 worked in the led designed to Vereisky experimental lithographic workshop of the Leningrad Union of artists (Leningrad branch of Union of artists). In his compositions in the spirit of "quiet art" (or a kind of lyrical expressionism) – predominantly black-and-white and color lithographs – resumed its characteristic motifs of pre-revolutionary "Jewish Renaissance", who sought to enter the ancient symbols of Judaism and small-town theme "Yiddish culture" to the mainstream of contemporary art. Old family photographs, ethnographic sketches, reminiscences sacral decor tombstones are in the images Kaplan romantically picturesque alloy. Among his works – the albums on the theme of Sholom Aleichem (Kasrilovka, 1941; Enchanted tailor, 1957; Tevye the milkman, 1961; Stempenyu, 1968) and the cycle of Jewish folk songs (1963). He also performed a series of Leningrad during the siege (1944-1949) in his characteristic shaky, like a "flowing" manner. In the late decades, are increasingly advocated and as a painter-Illustrator, the graph increased linear beginning (cycle of etchings Rogachev, 1970-ies). Since its operation, the main artist of the Leningrad factory glass (1950-1951) experienced a growing interest in voluminous form, and with the end of 1960-ies was actively engaged in ceramics (plaques, decorative dishes and plates, small sculptures in the technique of fire clay, colored glaze and engobe). Kaplan died in Leningrad on 3 July 1980.
