He is the first from the Siberian artists were awarded the title of honored artist of the RSFSR. D. I. Karatanova, an excellent teacher, a devotee of art, raised many of the Krasnoyarsk artists. His work served as a link between the Russian realistic, and the emerging new Soviet art: after all, his work began long before October, and mentor was the great Surikov. Their first meeting took place in 1888, and then they saw each other every time I visited V. I. Surikov in Krasnoyarsk. Vasily Ivanovich was from childhood familiar with his father Karatanova. This closeness was of particular importance. Surikov constantly followed the progress of young friend, helped him to understand the complex issues of art, gave advice and insisted that Karatani went to study at the Academy of artists. The second teacher was Karatanova M. A. Rudchenko, who for two years had prepared him for admission to the Academy. In 1892 eighteen Karatani "moved to distant Petersburg" and was accepted among the students of the Academy. Here his favorite teacher was Arkhip Kuindzhi, much appreciated original talent Karatanova. A full course of study at the Academy of Karatani's not done. After four years of study he returned to Krasnoyarsk. Began independent creative work. On the causes of early departure from St. Petersburg Dmitry Innokentievich never told anyone. Karatanova creative legacy is very extensive. He was a constant participant of all city, regional, Russian art exhibitions since 1900. Some of his works were exhibited in Moscow in pre-revolutionary years and in our days. Dmitry Antonov traveled on the edge. He was the first Siberian artists for dozens of years gave inspired work on the artistic development of the North, its nature of work and life of the indigenous inhabitants of the Arctic. With the best expeditions Karatani made up to a dozen trips to the North, six of them until October. Numerous pencil drawings, watercolors, oil sketches, more or less finished, done "on the fly", was a kind of artistic reportage "life itself", in that their immeasurable value. Landscapes, architecture, objects of work and life, types of people, genre scenes, in which we find employment: "Salmon fishermen", "Unloading the boats", "Mending nets", "After fishing", and domestic scenes, aptly captured by the eye of the artist: "the Tea party in the tent", "the conversation", "Hunters", "Evenk woman by the stream", "Death of a shaman", "Splan". The post-October period was the most fruitful for Karatanova. They created an interesting and important theme of the works of historical and portrait genres. The most significant of them: "Partisans", "Explorers of Siberia", "may day "Poles" in 1905", "Funeral worker Salnikova", "Krasnoyarsk rebellion of 1695", "Portrait of V. I. Lenin of the period of Siberian exile", "Portrait of the commander of the partisans E. P. schetinkin", "Portrait of A. D. Kravchenko", etc. D. I. Karatani has left us a wonderful landscape paintings in which the nature of Siberia has found its true interpretation. In landscapes Karatanova closely intertwined and lyricism, and epic power of nature. With the Majesty of the image, and the natural simplicity attracted landscape "view of the "Pillars" in the winter". The artist deploys a panorama of the area shows spectacular depth of field. Nature offers to man, conquering it in its richness, scope, epic calm and quiet. A prominent place in the work Karatanova occupied the Yenisei. Mighty Siberian river conquered with their grandeur and beauty many artists. Not one piece dedicated to her and Karatani: "Enisey. Last ice", "Enisey. Hag, Yenisei near Selivanikha","Ice drift on the Yenisei, Yenisei at the Biryusa", just "Break", "Enisey. Ice drift", "the Yenisei river in Dudinka village".
