(Kondakov)

A. P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva was the daughter of a high official P. I. Ostroumova (the second surname she acquired in 1905, she was married to the famous scientist-chemist Sergey Lebedev). Still a schoolgirl she began attending elementary school at TSUTR. Then he studied in the school, which was fascinated by the technique of engraving and the Academy of arts, where he studied painting in the Studio of I. E. Repin. In 1898-99 he worked in Paris, perfected in painting (at the George. Whistler) and engraving. A turning point in her life was 1900, the artist debuted with his engravings at the exhibition "World of art" (which further firmly associated with their works), and then received the second prize for engraving at the competition OPH OH and graduated with the title artist, presenting 14 prints. Ostroumova-Lebedeva belonged to a major role in the revival in Russia of easel woodcuts as an independent form of art - after a long existence as a reproductive technology; especially great merit of the artist in the revival of printmaking in color. Original methods of generalization of form and colour, produced it, was learned and used many other artists. The main theme of her prints was Petersburg, the image of which she has devoted decades of tireless work.

Her color and black-and-white woodcut - like easel, the combined cycles (Petersburg, 1908 - 10; Pavlovsk, 1922-23, etc.), and filled for books by V. Y. Kurbatov, "Petersburg" (1912) and N. P. Antsiferov's the Soul of St. Petersburg (1920) - still unsurpassed in accuracy of the feeling and transfer the majestic beauty of the city and on rare conciseness of expression. Reproduced many times and different occasions, they have become paradigmatic and are extremely popular. Very interesting and extraordinary were the works created by the artist's experiences from frequent trips - both abroad (Italy, France, Spain, Netherlands) and the country (Baku, Crimea). Some of them were executed in the engraving, and watercolors. A gifted and trained painter, Ostroumova-Lebedeva could not work with oil paints because the smell of them caused her asthma attacks. But she mastered the difficult and whimsical painting technique watercolor, and doing it all my life, creating superb landscapes and portraits ("portrait of the actor I. V. Yershov", 1923; "Portrait of Andrei Bely", 1924; "Portrait of artist E. S. Kruglikova", 1925, etc.). The war Ostroumova-Lebedeva spent in besieged Leningrad, leaving your favorite things and completing work on the third volume of "Autobiographical notes". The last years of the artist's life were overshadowed by the impending blindness, but while it was possible, she continued to work.
