Biography and information

Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR.

People's Artist of the USSR (1976), laureate of the State Prize of the Armenian SSR.

He studied at the Nersisyan seminary, at the same time attended painting and sculpture courses (school of O. Schmerling) 1906 -1918. in Tiflis and in Moscow. SVOMAS (1918-19) by P.P. Konchalovsky. In 1921, Yervand Kochar was a professor of painting in Tiflis, and before leaving for Paris he was already a well-known artist. Since 1923 he lived and worked in Paris. During his 13 years in Paris, he has participated in numerous exhibitions of epoch-making significance. Organizes 5 personal exhibitions, receiving the highest art criticism reviews. In France, he created a new kind of artistic - plastic expressiveness (“Peinture dans l'espace”), which includes time as an additional fourth dimension. In 1936 the “Manifesto of Dimonism” was published, which was the messenger of the latest artistic principles of the time. In the annals of art history they write that even 10 years before the Manifesto appeared, Kochar already used these principles in his works. It is enough to look at the list of signatories of this document, and not only the entire selected circle of the creators of the Vanguard, but also the place and significance of Kochar’s work in time and along with them, appears before his eyes. In 1936, Kochar repatriated to the USSR. Of course, the prohibitions, imprisonment, and subsequent isolation influenced Kochar’s career, but in this case, apparently, the law of counteraction worked. Undoubtedly, Khrushchev’s “thaw” also played a role ...
It was a time of brilliant creative ups, awakened hopes and the collapse of these hopes ...
In these years the canvases “Ecstasy” (1960), “Horrors of War” (1962), sculptures “The Eagle of Zvartnots” (1955), “Melancholy” (1959), “The Muse of Cybernetics” (1972) were created. .), “Vardan Mamikonyan” (1975), and became the symbol of Armenia - “David Sasunsky” (1959), as well as other priceless creations.
Kochar passed away in 1979. in Yerevan.
