Born in Paris on 22 may 1733 in the family of servants of the noble house. Originally received a religious education, suggesting to become a priest. However, the attraction to art led him to the workshops of the Academy of fine arts, where he studied with C. J. Natuar. As a pensioner of the Academy lived in 1754−1765 years in Italy, mainly in Rome, travelled through the country, along with Fragonard. Met Piranesi; influenced by last and George. P. Pannini. The poetics of ruins, historical impermanence is already formed in his sanguine drawings made at the Villa d’este near Rome (Louvre). Returning home, he lived mostly in Paris, in 1785−1787 years sketched antiquities of Provence; people came to work also in Normandy.
His paintings, exhibited in the Salons («Roman port», 1766, the Museum school of fine arts, Paris; etc.) quickly gained popularity. Diderot praised him for «the beautiful and majestic ruins». Actively developed a fashion theme, creating the piece works, and cycles, designed for the design of large interiors (the"Interior of the temple of Diana at nîmes", «the Temple of Jupiter in Rome," 1760-ies, the Louvre, etc.). Organically combined an elegiac reverie of images, the subtle light and perspective effects with daily generic parts. Captured a number of episodes of the French revolution (destruction of the Bastille, the Royal tombs in Saint-Denis, etc.). Suspected of disloyalty to the new regime were arrested and imprisoned. However, continued to work while in custody (1793−1794), leaving a number of beautiful images of prison life. Was soon restored to the position of curator of the Louvre, which at that time was transformed from a Royal Palace into a Museum.
