He studied at the Kyiv drawing school N. And. Murashko, then N. GE, he worked as an assistant to V. Vasnetsov painting of the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev, under the leadership of Mikhail Vrubel painting the interior of the Church. He studied at the Moscow School of painting, sculpture and architecture, he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of arts (1891) and in 1894 received the title of artist. In 1895 he was invited by I. Repin for teaching in organising preparatory art Studio sponsored by M. K. Tenisheva. In Tenishev St. Petersburg Studio, he studied in different years I. Bilibin, V. Falileev, Z. Serebryakova, E. chepcov, N. Shestopalov, S. Chekhonin, M. Yakovlev, E. Chestnyakov etc. In the following, 1896, on the recommendation of Ilya Repin of M. K. Tenisheva invited the class as a teacher and head of the Smolensk drawing school, where he worked for 4 years. Then traveled to Russia, collected ethnographic materials, worked as a restorer at the Tretyakov gallery.
