Joseph M. Levine (1894, St. Petersburg-1979, France). From the collection of Dr. A. the First work - his last self-portrait.
He received his artistic education in Pet...erbury. After the revolution of 1917 he moved to Russia, participated in exhibitions in Saratov and Orenburg, for the building project of the people's University in Penza received the award (1922). In Chita the publishing house "Scythians" released a book of his poems and drawings for children ("Carousel", "Herringbone and harlequin").
Since 1922-in emigration in China. Held a personal exhibition in Beijing. At the end of the 1920s came to Paris. Exhibited paintings and drawings in the salon of independents; participated in exhibitions in new York (1928) and nice (1929). In 1930 he executed the sets and costumes for the concert. Gateway "the Soul of Moscow" in the hall Gaveau. In the same year held a solo exhibition at the gallery de la Jeune Parque. In 1936 he participated in the exhibition organized by magazine "Our Union" in the gallery Zak. Was engaged in book illustration.
Before the Second world war he moved to USA and settled in new York. Wrote an abstract painting, she developed her own direction, "nagsasariling" art – subconsciencely. Held solo exhibitions in new York (1947) and Paris (1950 – gallery des Garets; 1959 – gallery of M. Bernheim; 1967 – gallery Du Passeur). In 1955 he participated in a group exhibition by 11 artists at the River-Side Museum (Museum of N. K. Roerich; the participants were V. A. Izdebsky).
He published books of his poems with drawings: "Legend of Raven" (new York, 1945) and "the Catch" (new York-Paris, 1966), the play "Matsa" (Paris, 1971), novels "Redistribution" (new York-Paris", 1967) and "Adam's happiness" (Paris, 1967).
Brother of the artist Benjamin (1892-1953) – left SR, the poet and critic (alias V. Dreamer V. Mendeleyev, V. Pechersky), member of the friendship circle of S. A. Yesenin, which left memories.
