Painter, graphic artist, EXT. hood. Of the USSR (1980), full member AH the USSR (1973). He studied at the school. Variety - of arts in Leningrad (1929-36) from K. Petrov-Vodkin. From 1937 he taught in Moscow. hood. the Institute, since 1950 Professor. Paintings with a fully developed plot close in style to the paintings by Yuri Pimenov. Themed paintings ("Victory. Berlin", 1947; "After demonstration", 1949), a lyrical genre paintings (cycle "the people of the virgin" and "virgin soil", 1956-60; the painting "the Trinity. Absentee", 1978), etc.

During the great Patriotic war of 1941-45 and the postwar years has executed a number of paintings dedicated to Soviet soldiers and partisans ("Victory. Berlin, 1945", 1947), in 1949 - the painting "After the demonstration" (both works are in the Tretyakov gallery).

Since 1954, working on a series of lyrical genre scenes devoted to the work and life of Soviet youth in the virgin lands (cycles "people of the virgin", "virgin soil"). State prize of the RSFSR. I. E. Repina (1967).
