The childhood of the artist was held in Riga, from 1916-18. year, place and his parents were refugees in Dnepropetrovsk. Then he returned back to Latvia, and he began studying at the Riga city German gymnasium, 1931-38. years intermittently studied architecture at the University of Latvia, where he attended courses in painting of V. Purvitis. With 1938. years studied with A. Derain in Paris.
Part in exhibitions since 1932. year. Member of the Union of Artists since 1946. the year 1951. year excluded from 1957. years passed back.
With 1938.- 41. worked in a bookshop "Valters and Rapa" in the foreign Department, from 1941. year Riga Museum of History and navigation. In 1944. year drafted into the German army, then escape in Kurzeme. C 1947.-48. worked as a teacher at J. Rozentala Riga art school. At this time he is with like-minded people gathered in the French group. In 1951. year arrested and sentenced to 25. years for treason, counter-revolutionary agitation and propaganda. In conclusion, the Omsk region was until 1956. year. Rehabilitated 1991. Worked publishing works in the Riga Museum of History and shipping, the Daile theatre from 1967.-72. year at the combine "Maksla" where he designed exhibitions and permanent expositions. Honored worker of arts of the Latvian SSR in 1989. year. Honorary member of Latvian Academy of Sciences since 1990. year.
Worked in a tradition technique, but at the end of 1950-ies stayed mostly in watercolors. One of the first to introduce watercolor Latvian art. Works are mainly grouped in cycles (exhibited in personal exhibitions), where the main theme – the Latvian folklore, old legends, world literature, cultural layer and their relationship.
In the sixtieth year is recognized as an abstract artist:
1967. – personal exhibition "Lipskie legends"
1977. - personal exhibition "Passages of the Indians"
1978. - personal exhibition "Shopenska theme"
1981. - personal exhibition "Guests and passengers"
C 1974. worked mainly in the technique of the pen. He created paintings in which the associative perception of the world komuniciram with different cultural reminiscences. Formed individual style of the artist – virtuosity lines, layering of colors, which reflects the dimension of the spirit world (the cycle of "Gypsies" 1974, "Passage" 1976, "Everywhere the beat" 1986, "Traces" 1990). Worked with pastels (exhibition "the Harbour" 1975). A significant contribution to the art of book design (Homer "Iliad" 1961, "the Odyssey," 1967 and others).
