Alexandrovich Shapiro

Was born in Daugavpils, Latvia. He studied at art schools in Kharkov (1915) and Kiev (1918). In 1919 he directed his drawing school in Yekaterinoslav (now Dnepropetrovsk). In 1921 he arrived in Petrograd, he continued his studies in GShM and directed the children's art school. In 1920s he was engaged in scenography in the Petrograd and Moscow theaters. Participated in exhibitions of the Art Bureau of N. Dobychina (1922), of Paintings by Petrograd artists of all directions (1923), the group "United arts" (1925). In 1925 he settled in Paris. From 1926 he exhibited in the salons: Autumn, Tuileries, Independent, Populiste, 1935 – Verhnesvirsky. Held solo exhibitions in galleries Kleinman (1930), Bonaparte (1936), de L'elysee (1946); participated in many exhibitions of Russian art including the exhibition "Russian artists of Paris school" (1961). Executed lithographs to the book of Knuth's "Selected poems". In 1960 he published a book of memoirs about life in the famous 1920s artist colony "La Ruche". Contributed to the preservation of "La Ruche", when the building was to be demolished. Presented at the National Museum of modern art in Paris and at the Art Institute of Chicago.
