Dostoevsky). Since the beginning of 1970-ies was often put their belongings abroad.

His early landscapes and genres written in the spirit of impulsive-colorful Fauvism (Tatar songs, 1961-1963; the girl with the ribbon, 1964; both in a private collection, Moscow). Later moved on to vysvetleni tone "metaphysical still lifes" where the beginning is pointless, whitish element colors more and more absorbed objects (Composition with skull, Dead bird; both work – 1966, ibid.). "Classic Steinberg" was formed under the decisive influence of abstractions of Malevich: keeping the overall impression of a soaring space of light forms, the artist has minimized the inherent ancestral Suprematism sharp color contrast, giving its images a semblance of melancholy "memories of the avant-garde". This kind of picture has developed into a huge multi-year cycle, plastically-elegant, full of delicate decorative flair: Composition (in memory of Nikolai Fyodorov), 1972, the Tretyakov gallery; Composition, 1973, Art, Ludwig forum, Aachen; Composition, 1981, the Tretyakov gallery; etc.). In parallel with painting began making gouaches and collages on cardboard. In a creative dialogue with the Moscow conceptualism, from the mid 1980-ies was introduced to the works of the inscription and the beginning of the plot: this is the Village cycle, full of memories of the Tarusa area and its inhabitants (Living and dead, polyptych, 1985, Art, Ludwig forum, Aachen; etc.).

Art Steinberg, graphically regenerating the formal and symbolic ties with the former Russian avant-garde received a great response during the adjustment period. His sad "letter of Kazimir Malevich" opened the acclaimed documentary film the Black square (1988, Director I. Pasternak).
