Johann Wolfgang Goethe (from 1782 von Goethe, German. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe; 28 August 1749, Frankfurt am Main - 22 March 1832, Weimar) was a German writer, thinker, philosopher and naturalist, and statesman. Goethe wrote in different genres: poetry, drama, epic, autobiography, epistolary. He became the main ideologist of the "Storm and Stress" movement. Together with Schiller, Herder, and Wieland he formed a movement in German literature which was called "Weimar Classicism". Goethe's novel Wilhelm Meister laid the foundation for the educational novel of the Enlightenment. Goethe's works, especially the tragedy Faust, are recognized as masterpieces of German and world literature. The legacy of the philosopher and poet is preserved and studied in the Goethe and Schiller Archives in Weimar.
