Description of the artwork «Sketch for "Cabaret"»

Kankan on the picture of Brimstone dancing in the club "Japanese sofa". This place was not far from his judge in Paris. Seurat set out to demonstrate one of the theories, which not so much followed as they tried to explain their art. Sera wanted to turn painting into a science, to control visual perception and to create an algorithm by which to write the masterpieces everyone can. Face it, he failed. But what a good attempt!

Before you begin writing the final version, Seurat made several studies (1, 2).

The artist has studied the approach of the Dutch artist Humbert de Superville, who acknowledged the emotional impact of the lines, and tried to embody it. According to this theory, a line drawn at a particular angle, able to convey a very specific emotion. In particular, warm colors and upward lines Express the joy, and the cool colors and downward lines – sadness, longing. "Cancan" was created in accordance with this scheme and theoretically should convey a fun, happy atmosphere of the club. However, the feeling of joy from painting something quickly.

Rather night drunken stupor – when the first dashing and impetuous, and the next morning ashamed and it would be better not to remember. It seems to be a dizzying upwards legs and flying skirts, vigorous phallic symbols and warm colors abound. But where is the contentment and joy? Alas, the case when the "boring theory, my friend." Happy and joyful painting the Georges Seurat in this case is not possible, isn't it? "If it's a pastime that I prefer to stay at home"– says the art critic Waldemar Januszczak looking at this picture.

The falsehood, the vulgarity and hypocrisy of Sulfur showed their "upward lines of" long legs of a cancan dancer. Like the pigs the viewer in the lower right corner, sheepish grins dancers, smug face mustachioed dandy between the dancers complete the experience. The theory of colors and emotional lines are clearly visible very pessimistic minded observer. Impressionism dropped romantic clothes and became neo-impressionism, sarcastically showing what is happening? It looks like it.
