He was born in Saxony.

Portrait painter, also wrote painting on themes from antiquity and mythology and history, was engaged in engraving. Living in Rome in 1787, he executed the orders of Catherine II for the Palace at Tsarskoye Selo. In 1795, and in 1800 received from the Academy the title of academician for the portrait of Rivera.
