The son of an official of the Ministry of justice of the Russian Empire, Vadim Meller made a stunning career as an artist of the Soviet theater in spite of his own aristocratic background (father born Sweden, mother poluitalyanka-papracane noble family).

Art education he received in Munich. Then followed years of study in Paris with Antoine Bourdelle, exhibition in the "Salon independent" and "Autumn salon".

The elements of the revolution captured him as an artist, keen on the new aesthetics. Vadim Meller was designed for mass revolutionary parties, performances, created architectural projects; since 1920 — Professor of the Academy of arts of Ukraine, at the same time — co-organizer of the theatre "Berezil". He was an active supporter of the "cultural synthesis" program, which was to combine architecture, theatre, cinema, space, enlightenment. He, like Les Kurbas, survived the universal fascination with technology and agentsresume — "a child's illness," of all the "left" artists of the 20-ies.

In 1908 he graduated from the law faculty of Kiev University. Studied at the Kiev art school, in 1908 and 1912 – in Munich Academy of arts and in the Free studios in Paris.

1953 to 1959 he was the chief artist of the Theater. Franco.

Created a milestone for the Ukrainian theatrical-decorative art works, characterized by ideological commitment, plastic expressiveness, diversity of expressive means. He has designed productions "Death squadron" (1933), "the Truth" (1937), "Bogdan Khmelnitsky" (1939), "Front" (1942), "Portrait" Afinogenova (1934), "Earth" Wirth (1938), "the Cherry orchard" (1946), "Yegor Bulychev and others" (1953), "Wings" , (1954), "King Lear" (1959), "Faust and Death" Levada (1961).

In 1921 to 1925 he taught at the Kiev art Institute.
