In 1932, Janis Gailis finished workshop Species of painting of V. Purvitis in the Latvian Academy of arts with diploma work "near the sea".
He worked as a teacher of drawing and history of arts in high school, Rezekne.
The artist has participated in exhibitions organized by the Foundation of culture.
In 1944 J. Gailis emigrated to Germany, where he studied painting and has organized several personal exhibitions in Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Munich, Dusseldorf, Belgium and Holland.
In 1950 the artist moved to the United States.
In 1961 he received the honorary prize of the cultural Foundation of Latvians in North America.
Their works of J. Gailis also exhibited in USA, Canada, and the greatest art centers of Western Europe, repeatedly receiving the highest rating.
