[16(28).11.1874, Rozensky vol., now Valmiera district - 24.9.1954, Riga], one of the first representatives of the Latvian school of sculpture of the 20th century, Studied at M. A. Chizhov in the Petersburg Central school of technical drawing of Baron Stieglitz (1893-99); perfected in the Studio of Auguste Rodin (1900-05). In 1906-07 he created political cartoons for the St. Petersburg Latvian satirical magazine "Swara" ("Libra"). He taught at the school of Baron Stieglitz (1905-18) and the Latvian Academy of arts (1924-32). In easel paintings and portraits sh. thoroughness and accuracy of interpretation of the forms is often combined with a painterly style sculpting. Works: portraits of R. Kaudzite (1902) and M. Kaudzite (1912), both bronze, Art Museum of Latvia. SSR, Riga; K. Baumanis (bronze, 1928, the Theatre of Opera and ballet of the Latvian SSR, Riga). In 1974 in Riga was opened a Memorial Museum of Skilter.
