Description of the artwork «Self-portrait»

Portrait the legacy of Karl Briullov carries not less valuable than the great painter gave the world the glory of "Pompey". In General, there are various self-portraits of the artist in different years. But the pinnacle in the genre of an intimate portrait of Briullov — self-portrait, created in 1848 during his illness. The Painting Briullov "Self-portrait"size 64*54 cm painted in oil, now it is stored in the State Tretyakov gallery.

Within 7 months 50-year-old artist, following the advice of the doctors, never left his home and most of the time was there all alone. And finally, on a fine day of may 1848, when the outside is already all bloomed, breathed the warm spring, the disease had retreated. First, I asked the painter at the doctor, who came to visit him, - an easel with paints, with which he drew a very quick self portrait. In the notes of the student, the artist says that the portrait was painted in just 1 session within a few hours. And although research has shown that the master returned to it several times with corrections and additions, the whole process was very rapid.

In the picture we see the pale face of the artist with tense eyelids, thin fingers — all issues the struggle of the author with the disease. Bryullov wearing a black shirt that symbolizes the fatigue and the humility of the hero. But at least the artist and tired of the fight, he still tries to protect their talent, to present to humanity for at least another couple of artwork. Sad eyes looking at us from the canvas, as if saying goodbye to the others, with the world, sunk into oblivion. This is one of the leading themes of romanticism is the struggle of the weak body with a strong spirit.

In the painting Briullov "Portrait" is all the author, the whole depth of great talent master. The painter depicts himself sitting up, his hand no strength rests on the couch, covered in red material. Such coloring there is a reason: besides the fact that this is a favorite color of the painter, on the canvas he creates a contrast between the weak from the illness of the artist and the vivid colors of the world that he loved so much. It is dominated by dark colors, but they are not dull, and full of inner radiance.
Picture of Karl Briullov "Portrait" is how he saw himself after the author of five tens of years. Sees his audience through a century and a half.

All the paintings of the author — an astonishing journey through the history and life of the great artist. Each canvas displays his attitude. Even doing custom work, the painter did not stop at a traditional performance, and was looking for the increasingly new approaches. Karl the great — so called contemporaries during his lifetime.
