Nikolay
Eduardovich Saks

Russia • 1849−1926

Painter-a landscape painter, assistant Secretary in the Society of Russian artists in Paris in 1881.

(*13/25 March 1849, Ekaterinoslav, now Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine – 28 December 1926, Zoppot (Freie Stadt Danzig), now Sopot, Poland), landscape painter, graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of arts in 1876.

On December 28 Capote died Nicholas E. Sachs.

N. Uh. Sachs was the great Russian artist and rare spiritual beauty. He was given the art all without a trace and worked, despite his 77 years of age, with a youthful fascination until the very last day of his life.

His paintings enjoyed enormous success at the Paris salon and in London, where he exhibited only a picture, written in India and in the island of Ceylon.

N. Uh. Sachs was a thoroughly educated man and revolved in a circle of the best people of his era. He was a close friend of Turgenev and Garshin, engaged them in conversation, living in Paris, was friends with Victor Hugo.

Landscape Pokhitonov wrote the only portrait of N. Uh. Saks, which last was kept as the best memory of his friend.

In 1908, Nikolay Eduardovich divided his estate in Ekaterinoslav lips. among the peasants, leaving for a house and 50 acres. In 1920 he emigrated from Russia and last lived in Capote. He felt a terrible need, positively starving, especially last year. He never complained about his situation and all his time was devoted to work.

On December 19, in Nikolaev the day, I caught him at work - he wrote Cathedral of his native town of Novomoskovsk with a sketch, made 45 years ago, and with passion and detail told me about the history of this wonderful Cathedral, built by the Cossacks.

A premonition of death, apparently, pulled it to this latest work to the thoughts and soul to leave home, native place, for he was sick with longing for Russia, and his desire was to die in his native land.
