Editor of the “Messenger of Fine Arts”, senior curator of the Hermitage (since 1886). Founding member of the Society of Russian aquaportists. The author of valuable factual information catalogs of the picture gallery of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (vols. 1-3, 1872–86), the Hermitage (Vol. 1-3, 1889-1908), works on K. P. Bryullov (1876), P. A. Fedotov (1878) and art-critical articles.
